House GOP Calls Out Cohen’s Lies, Referred To DOJ

House Republicans are raising concerns about the credibility of Michael Cohen, former personal attorney to Donald Trump, as he serves as a key witness in the ongoing criminal prosecution of the former president by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-KY) referred Cohen to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly lying to Congress under oath.

The Republican lawmakers cited at least six instances where Cohen is accused of making false statements during his February 2019 testimony before the House Oversight Committee. They also noted that Cohen had admitted to lying again during a separate 2019 deposition before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI).

“Currently Manhattan’s popularly elected District Attorney Alvin Bragg is using Cohen as his star witness in an ongoing criminal prosecution of President Donald Trump. Bragg’s case heavily relies on Cohen’s testimony and credibility” Jordan and Comer wrote. They added that Cohen’s advisor Lanny Davis had boasted that Bragg’s prosecution of Trump “all stemmed from Cohen’s testimony to Congress in 2019.”

The referral to the DOJ for investigation comes as Trump’s legal team has also questioned Cohen’s credibility, accusing him of committing perjury during recent court proceedings. Cohe,n who pleaded guilty to various crimes in 2018, has become a central figure in the legal challenges facing the former president.
