President Joe Biden is considering an election year conversion to becoming a border security hawk through executive action. This despite previous claims that he had no such authority as commander in chief to act against the illegal migrant invasion.

The Democrat is reportedly pondering a broad order to halt the acceptance of illegals claiming asylum who do not enter the U.S. at official border crossings.

This, as any honest observer realizes, is merely election year pandering and a sharp reversal from the ambivalence of his administration. Biden is sinking further behind Republican challenger Donald Trump and knows that the American people are fed up with his failure to protect the nation. 

In a Thursday interview, Trump’s former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tom Homan noted the obvious.

Of Biden, he said “he had three years to do this. Why now? Well, wait a minute. The election’s coming. He wants to act like he’s doing something. Too much damage has been done. Too little, too late.”

Indeed, Republicans and a growing number of Democrats have spent three years demanding that Biden take control of the border. The White House blatantly ignored calls for action and instead laid blame on those attempting to stem the tide of illegal migrants.

Sharp criticism also came from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

The Republican charged that Biden is merely engaged in “election year gimmicks” and is not serious about taking charge of the border. Johnson has been a leading voice in pushing the White House to take decisive action.

But, until recently, his words fell on deaf ears. “Now, in an election year,” Johnson declared, “after the president has surrendered the border to cartels and smugglers, after tens of thousands of Americans have tragically lost their lives to fentanyl poisoning,” Biden decides to act.

The president now, Johnson noted, “suddenly seems interested in trying to use the legal authority that he claimed until recently didn’t exist.”

If the White House is truly serious, the Speaker said, it could start by reinstituting Trump’s successful “Remain in Mexico” policy. It could also end the much-maligned parole system that results in millions being released into the nation’s interior.

These strong moves, as both Johnson and Biden know, are not going to be made.
