Russia Expels British Diplomats As UK Denies Spy Claims
The diplomatic standoff between Russia and Britain has deepened as Moscow accuses the UK of trying to obstruct peace efforts in Ukraine. Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) suggested that Britain fears direct negotiations between Moscow and Washington could interfere with its strategic interests.
This latest clash began when Russia expelled two British diplomats, alleging they had engaged in unauthorized intelligence work. Russian authorities claimed the diplomats deliberately misrepresented their activities. In retaliation, the UK stripped a Russian diplomat of accreditation, calling Russia’s accusations “malicious and baseless.”
The Russian government has taken its rhetoric further, accusing Britain of fueling international conflicts. The SVR referenced Britain’s historical role in previous wars, using the term “Perfidious Albion” to frame the UK as a destabilizing force. Moscow suggested that London is positioning itself to avoid direct consequences while pushing the world toward greater instability.
British officials quickly rejected the claims, arguing that Russia is attempting to deflect from its actions in Ukraine. Liberal Democrat MP Calum Miller dismissed the accusations as Kremlin propaganda aimed at shifting blame.
The UK has long accused Russia of covert activities, including espionage and cyber operations. British intelligence agencies recently dismantled a spy ring linked to Moscow, reinforcing concerns about Russia’s actions on foreign soil.
This latest dispute unfolds as U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian officials continue peace discussions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The ongoing tension between Britain and Russia threatens to complicate diplomatic efforts in resolving the Ukraine conflict.
