Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Indicted For Money Laundering
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been indicted on charges of money laundering. This comes after an investigation by the Federal Police, which revealed Bolsonaro’s involvement in attempting to smuggle in diamond jewelry valued at $3 million and selling luxury watches, as reported by the Associated Press.
According to the Brazillian leftist regime, Bolsonaro allegedly sold two watches gifted by Saudi Arabia in 2019, earning nearly $70,000. Under Brazilian law, any citizen arriving by plane must declare goods worth more than $1,000 and pay a tax of 50% on the value above that threshold.
The investigation also revealed that Mauro Cid, one of Bolsonaro’s top aides, sold a Rolex and a Patek Philippe watch to a U.S. store in June 2022, garnering a total of $68,000. The socialists in power claim that these transactions were part of the larger scheme involving the undeclared Saudi diamonds.
Bolsonaro and his legal team have denied any wrongdoing regarding this indictment, which is part of a series of legal attacks the former president faces. He is also accused of ordering an aide to falsify his COVID-19 vaccination records.
The police report with the indictment has not yet been submitted to Brazil’s Supreme Court. Once it is, the prosecutor general will decide whether to file charges and bring Bolsonaro to trial.
