FBI Unlocks Phone Of Trump Assassination Attempt Suspect
The FBI has successfully accessed the phone of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old who attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. This announcement comes as the bureau intensifies its investigation into the incident, which left Trump and two other attendees injured and resulted in the death of 50-year-old Corey Comperatore.
According to a statement released Monday, FBI technical specialists are currently analyzing Crooks’ electronic devices. “FBI technical specialists successfully gained access to Thomas Matthew Crooks’ phone, and they continue to analyze his electronic devices,” the statement read. The search of Crooks’ residence and vehicle has also been completed.
The FBI’s investigation is comprehensive, involving interviews with nearly 100 law enforcement personnel, event attendees, and other witnesses. “The FBI has received hundreds of digital media tips which include photos and videos taken at the scene, and we continue to review incoming tips,” the bureau added. Victim services personnel are offering assistance to those affected by Saturday’s shooting.
Despite the FBI’s efforts, some Republicans have expressed skepticism about the bureau leading the investigation, citing concerns about political bias. Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX) voiced his constituents’ worries, stating, “My constituents are deeply concerned with the FBI conducting the sole investigation into the attempted assassination of President Trump. They don’t have faith in the current FBI leadership to get to the truth given how they have targeted President Trump with political witch hunt after witch hunt at the behest of Joe Biden.”
The FBI has faced criticism for its handling of other high-profile investigations, including the shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville. In that case, the bureau has been accused of suppressing the writings of the transgender-identifying woman who killed six people at the Christian school last year.
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers are also questioning the Secret Service’s handling of security at the rally. They are demanding that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas provide documents explaining the security measures taken before the rally. Concerns have been raised about how Crooks was able to gain access to a rooftop so close to where Trump was speaking.
As the investigation continues, the FBI remains focused on analyzing the digital evidence and gathering information to understand the motives and actions of Crooks. The bureau’s findings will be crucial in addressing the security lapses that allowed the assassination attempt to occur and ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
