EU Targets Musk’s X Platform Amid Concerns Over Migrant Crisis Revelations
The European Union is ramping up pressure on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, by demanding access to internal algorithm data. The move comes amid accusations that Musk is using the platform to expose the continent’s migrant crisis and support populist movements challenging ruling parties.
Regulators in Brussels announced an intensified investigation into X under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The law, enacted in 2022, allows the EU to regulate online platforms, targeting so-called misinformation and hate speech. The bloc has given X a deadline of February 15 to submit internal documents detailing how its content recommendation system works and any recent changes.
Critics argue that the EU’s focus on X is politically motivated, with tensions rising ahead of Germany’s upcoming election. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has taken a hard stance against mass migration, has seen a significant surge in popularity. Musk recently hosted an interview with AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, drawing hundreds of thousands of viewers.
European Commission officials claim their inquiry aims to ensure compliance with EU regulations. Henna Virkkunen, the digital commissioner, stated that the investigation seeks to maintain a “safe and democratic” online space. However, opponents of the EU’s actions believe the investigation is an effort to limit free speech and control political narratives.
The EU’s scrutiny of X is not new. Former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton previously pressured Musk to censor content on the platform, particularly after Musk allowed President Donald Trump to speak freely on X. Some European leaders have also expressed frustration over Musk’s vocal opposition to their handling of the ongoing migrant crisis.
Musk has repeatedly defended X’s policies, asserting that the platform upholds free speech. He has also criticized EU authorities for attempting to stifle dissent and silence voices that challenge the mainstream narrative.
