China Has Large Role In America’s Fentanyl Crisis

Author Peter Schweizer discussed China’s involvement in America’s ongoing drug crisis in a recent interview with conservative commentator Mark Levin. Schweizer pointed to the presence of 2,000 Chinese nationals just south of the U.S. border in Mexico who are reportedly collaborating closely with Mexican cartels. They are actively involved in manufacturing and smuggling the deadly poisonous drug fentanyl across the border.

Despite a comprehensive report by a congressional commission in 2021 highlighting this threat, the Biden administration has failed to take substantive action. Schweizer describes the current border policy as “criminal negligence.” The stakes are undeniably high, with fentanyl poisoning now the leading cause of death for Americans under 45. The Biden State Department has consistently avoided any direct confrontation with China on the matter.

The war against drugs, particularly fentanyl, is being fought on home soil as well. In a secret Californian facility, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is amassing vast quantities of fentanyl and its chemical precursors, most originating from China. Despite the tireless efforts of agencies like the Drug Enforcement Administration, which seized over 200 kilograms of fentanyl precursor chemicals last June, the influx continues unabated. This is compounded by the Justice Department’s indictments against Chinese companies and individuals for their role in trafficking these deadly chemicals.

In a recent move, California has beefed up its border security, a testament to the severity of the crisis. Yet, the problem runs deeper, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl being attributed to over 70,000 overdose deaths in the U.S. in a single year. These numbers paint a grim picture of a nation struggling with an unprecedented drug epidemic fueled significantly by external forces.

What is particularly alarming is the arrogance of the implicated Chinese entities. Advertisements for precursor chemicals have been found targeting markets in Mexico and the U.S., with shipments cleverly disguised to evade detection. This subterfuge represents a blatant challenge to U.S. law enforcement efforts to stem the tide of fentanyl into the country.

The situation has escalated to an international standoff, with China calling for the U.S. to halt what it deems baseless accusations and sanctions against its companies and citizens. This standoff follows Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to China, which failed to yield substantive cooperation on the fentanyl issue.
