AOC Faces Scrutiny As Tom Homan Presses DOJ Over Immigration Webinar
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing criticism for hosting an event that advised illegal immigrants on avoiding ICE encounters, prompting Border Czar Tom Homan to ask the Department of Justice if her actions violated federal law.
Homan, the former acting ICE director, confirmed that he reached out to the Deputy U.S. Attorney General to clarify whether Ocasio-Cortez’s involvement constituted obstruction of immigration enforcement. “I sent an email to the Deputy AG today,” he said, seeking guidance on whether she crossed a legal line.

The controversy stems from a virtual event called “Know Your Rights With ICE,” which Ocasio-Cortez hosted on her Facebook page. The session provided information to illegal immigrants on how to refuse ICE searches and remain silent if approached by immigration agents.

Ocasio-Cortez responded to the criticism by claiming ICE agents were unlawfully entering homes without proper warrants. She argued that her event was a necessary public service to inform individuals of their rights under U.S. law.

Legal analysts note that Know Your Rights seminars are common and generally protected under the First Amendment. However, if it is determined that Ocasio-Cortez’s webinar actively interfered with federal law enforcement operations, it could trigger further scrutiny.

The DOJ has not yet confirmed whether it will launch an investigation. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has reinforced its position that any interference with immigration enforcement will be met with legal action.
