AOC Demands Clarence Thomas Recuse Himself From Trump Case

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) demanded that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recuse himself from the case pending over former President Donald Trump’s eligibility for the 2024 ballot.

The firebrand radical, who has been rather quiet of late, sprang back into the limelight with her Monday interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

Ocasio-Cortez declared, “It’s very clear: Clarence Thomas and, rather, his wife Ginni, participated in the events of Jan. 6, and now what is likely coming before the Supreme Court is a judgment as to whether an event that his wife participated in…qualifies as an insurrection.”

She added that Virginia “Ginni” Thomas was investigated by the notoriously discredited House Jan. 6 committee. As if this were a badge of dishonor.

Ginni Thomas, to be certain, was not present at the Jan. 6 Capitol demonstration. Like many thousands of others, she went to hear then-President Trump speak to the crowd some distance away.

Ocasio-Cortez claimed that having Thomas participate in the looming case would create a “scandal.” She called it a “classic, textbook conflict of interest.”

The New York representative and seven other House Democrats signed a letter last week to Justice Thomas. Referring to the Capitol demonstration, they claimed without evidence that Ginni Thomas “was instrumental in planning it and bringing the insurrectionists to the Capitol.”

The group of eight asserted that “it is unthinkable that you could be impartial in deciding whether an event your wife personally organized qualifies as an ‘insurrection’ that would prevent someone from holding the office of president.”

The House Jan. 6 committee sat with Ginni Thomas for a nearly three-hour interview in September 2022. There she confirmed her belief that there were irregularities and voter fraud throughout the hotly contested 2020 presidential election.

Committee members could not agree on whether the justice’s wife was part of an effort to overturn the election results.

Clarence Thomas recused himself from a case involving former Trump legal advisor John Eastement in October 2022. Ocasio-Cortez claimed the conservative justice established a “precedent” by that action and demanded he do the same with upcoming decisions involving Trump.

The chances of Thomas removing himself from the upcoming cases are slim and none. And congressional Democrats need to brush up on the constitutional principle of separation of powers before further involving themselves in the operations of the Supreme Court.
