Simpson and her daughter subsequently drove to a nearby PetSmart. Hampton reportedly followed them, and the argument resumed inside the pet store, leading employees to ask all parties to leave the premises.
Escalation and Fatal Outcome
Outside the PetSmart, the confrontation escalated. Surveillance and cellphone video captured Hampton throwing a drink bottle at Simpson’s vehicle. Simpson then approached Hampton, and a physical altercation began. During this fight, Hampton reportedly drew a handgun and fired three shots, striking Simpson multiple times.
Hampton fled the scene. Simpson was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Dallas Police arrested Hampton later that evening. She has been charged with murder and is currently held in Dallas County Jail without bond. Hampton has claimed self-defense.
Public and Legal Implications
This event has prompted discussions regarding conflict resolution, public safety in retail environments, and the application of self-defense laws. Retailers may review existing security protocols and staff training for de-escalation techniques. The case also brings attention to Texas self-defense statutes, which protect legitimate claims but require scrutiny when an individual instigates a confrontation. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is tasked with evaluating the circumstances, particularly Hampton’s actions of following Simpson and initiating physical aggression, in relation to her self-defense claim.
As of October 10, 2025, Hampton remains in custody awaiting trial. The Dallas Police Department continues its investigation and is seeking additional witnesses.
