Training for a Purpose

In April, 28-year-old Hannah Caitlin Parker made the decision to enroll the family’s goldendoodle, Belle, in a professional autism assistance program. She selected ProK9, a facility in Granbury, Texas, after researching several options. The program lasted approximately four months, during which Belle remained in Texas while the family stayed in Alabama.

Parker described the separation as challenging but said her son Jonas understood the goal: Belle would return better equipped to help him manage sensory and emotional needs. The absence heightened anticipation, with the family counting down the days until they could see their dog again.

The Journey Back

In July, Parker’s family undertook a 15-hour drive to collect Belle. Upon arrival, they participated in an eight-day course designed to teach them how to act as Belle’s certified handlers. During this time, Belle reunited with Jonas, who could hardly contain his excitement at seeing his companion again.

Before training, Jonas and Belle already shared a close bond. However, her new skills have strengthened their relationship. Belle’s training emphasizes calmness in busy or chaotic environments, which helps Jonas when he becomes overexcited or begins stimming in new settings. Once Belle recognized her friend, she showered him with affection.

Skills That Matter

Belle’s training now allows her to perform targeted tasks that support Jonas’s sensory needs. Jonas is described as a “sensory seeker,” meaning he benefits from physical pressure such as hugs when overwhelmed. Belle can now perform deep pressure therapy by leaning her body weight against him to provide comfort.

She can also detect when Jonas is experiencing a stimulatory episode and respond with pressure or gentle contact, such as a kiss, to help him regulate his emotions. Beyond emotional support, Belle has been scent-trained to identify both Jonas and his sister, Charleigh. This enables her to locate them quickly if they become separated from their parents—a significant safety feature for families affected by autism.

Ongoing Impact

Parker noted that Belle had already displayed some natural aptitude for assistance work before formal training, but the program helped refine and expand her capabilities. ProK9’s structured methods provided Belle with tools to better serve Jonas, reinforcing both safety and emotional stability.

For the Parker family, Belle’s return marks not just the end of a training period, but the beginning of a deeper, more functional partnership. Her skills offer both practical safety benefits and the reassurance of constant companionship, making her a valuable and beloved part of Jonas’s everyday life.
