Trump Calls For Mystery Drones To Be Shot Down If Government ‘Really’ Can’t Identify Them
President-elect Donald Trump has called for action regarding reports of mysterious drones being sighted across the United States, urging for them to be shot down if the government lacks knowledge of their origins.
“Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge,” Trump wrote on Friday. “I [don’t] think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, [shoot] them down!”
The statement comes after the FBI and Department of Homeland Security released a joint statement addressing drone sightings in New Jersey. The agencies noted, “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.”
While the joint statement suggested many reported sightings may have been manned aircraft operating lawfully, it also highlighted gaps in current authorities. “The reported sightings…highlight the insufficiency of current authorities,” the statement read, adding that no malicious activity has been confirmed at this stage.
Amid growing concern, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster, New Jersey, which includes Trump’s golf club. The FAA emphasized its commitment to safely integrating drones into U.S. airspace, warning drone operators of significant penalties for endangering public safety.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby addressed the issue, stating that President Biden has instructed his team to investigate. However, Kirby expressed reservations about Trump’s call for shooting down drones, citing risks to public safety and insufficient information. “We just don’t know enough to take those kinds of actions,” Kirby said.
As concerns grow about unauthorized drone activity, the debate continues over how to respond to these mysterious sightings while balancing public safety and national security.
