Smugglers Urge Migrants To Cross Border Before Trump Reinstates Border Policies

Human traffickers are pressuring migrants to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, warning that stricter immigration policies are imminent. Smugglers have reportedly been using messaging apps like WhatsApp to convey urgency, telling migrants, “It’s now or never,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

These traffickers, often tied to criminal cartels, have told migrants that Trump’s administration will immediately enforce tougher border restrictions, making illegal crossings more difficult. The messages have also sarcastically wished migrants “luck” in avoiding apprehension after Trump’s anticipated policy changes.

Trump has pledged to prioritize immigration enforcement on day one of his presidency. His plans include deploying National Guard troops to the southern border, reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, and resuming border wall construction. Additionally, he aims to bring back Title 42, which allows border officials to expel migrants quickly without processing asylum claims.

While smugglers push migrants to act quickly, Mexican law enforcement officials have reportedly warned against making the journey. Despite these warnings, U.S. border officials are preparing for a potential surge as migrants try to cross before Trump’s policies take effect.

Texas, under the leadership of Gov. Greg Abbott (R), has bolstered its border security efforts in response to the increased activity. Additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed to manage the expected influx of migrants and deter illegal crossings.

Trump’s incoming administration is expected to reverse many of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, which critics argue contributed to record numbers of illegal crossings. The urgency expressed by smugglers reflects the anticipated impact of Trump’s policies on their operations.
