Schiff Leads Call For Renewed Big Tech Censorship Ahead Of Election
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and a group of Democrat lawmakers are once again urging Big Tech companies to ramp up censorship efforts, particularly targeting speech related to elections. In a letter addressed to major platforms like Meta, Google, X, and YouTube, Schiff and seven others complained that many of these companies have cut back their so-called “trust and safety” teams responsible for content moderation.
The letter, signed by Reps. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Hank Johnson (D-GA), and others, criticized the decision to allow former President Donald Trump back on these platforms. It also took aim at the platforms’ decision to stop banning content related to claims about the 2020 election, saying such moves undermine “election integrity.” The lawmakers expressed concern that Big Tech might be “backsliding” on its promises to combat what they describe as “misinformation and disinformation.”
What has raised eyebrows is the direct pressure on these platforms to censor a political candidate, which many see as a direct attack on free speech protected by the First Amendment. Schiff’s group wants these companies to adopt election censorship as a year-round practice, not just in the lead-up to elections.
The letter also seemed to suggest coordination between Big Tech and the government, asking companies to “commit to keeping Congress fully informed” about their censorship efforts. Schiff’s ongoing push for censorship has drawn sharp criticism from conservatives who view it as part of a broader effort to stifle opposition voices.
