Marjorie Taylor Greene Backs Trump Plan To Rename Gulf Of Mexico
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced plans to introduce a bill renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” aligning with President-elect Donald Trump’s recent comments. Greene’s proposal has already sparked interest among Republican colleagues but faces significant hurdles in Congress.
Speaking on a podcast, Greene expressed enthusiasm for Trump’s idea. “I was so inspired watching President Trump’s press conference that I instructed my staff to draft legislation immediately,” she said. Trump had suggested the name change while criticizing Mexico’s trade practices and immigration policies.
The bill, which Greene promised to introduce “ASAP,” would require federal agencies, including the U.S. military, to adopt the new name. While Greene has rallied support from GOP colleagues, the measure is likely to face challenges in clearing the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold.
President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start.
I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America! pic.twitter.com/uFlrNkw7c6

Greene acknowledged that enforcing the name change could require federal funding, potentially raising concerns among fiscally conservative lawmakers. Despite this, Greene doubled down on her commitment, calling the Gulf of America a “rightful name” for the body of water.

It is now the Gulf of America. Calling it the "Gulf of Mexico" is misgendering and deadnaming it. pic.twitter.com/ulUwINdMC3

Trump’s suggestion comes amid broader criticism of Mexico and Canada. The president-elect has proposed additional tariffs on goods from both countries and has hinted at more drastic measures, including merging the U.S. and Canada to eliminate tariffs altogether.

Critics of the name change argue it serves little practical purpose and could strain relations with neighboring countries. However, Greene and her allies see the proposal as a symbolic assertion of American strength and sovereignty.
YES! Trump just declared that he is changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to The Gulf Of America! 🇺🇸
I love it. What do you think about that?

Trump is legitimately about to buy Greenland, liberate Canada, reclaim the Panama Canal, and rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”.

While the legislation faces an uphill battle, it reflects Trump’s and Greene’s shared emphasis on reshaping U.S. policies and symbolism in the name of national pride. The debate over the Gulf of America proposal is likely to add to the already polarized political climate as Trump prepares to take office for a second term.
