Liberals Flood NYC Therapists After Trump’s Election Victory
President-elect Donald Trump’s resounding 2024 victory has sparked a wave of anxiety among liberals in New York City, leading to a significant surge in demand for therapy. Local psychologists and psychotherapists report being inundated with requests for appointments as their clients grapple with shock, fear, and frustration.
“It’s a perfect storm for New York therapists,” said Chloe Carmichael, a Manhattan psychologist who noted a 15% increase in inquiries since Trump’s win. “It’s a repeat of 2016, where a lot of people feel really scared and traumatized and angry.”
Therapist Alyson Cohen said she awoke to numerous messages from clients on Wednesday morning. Many expressed fear for their future and their children’s well-being. Some female clients even shared doubts about having children, citing concerns about pregnancy-related health care under Trump’s administration.
Relationship strain is another challenge therapists are observing. Lisa Brateman, a psychotherapist specializing in couples, reported increased tension in split-party relationships. One Democratic voter requested a solo session after a joint appointment with her Trump-supporting partner, struggling to process her emotions.
“For women worried about their rights, a partner voting for Trump can feel deeply personal,” Brateman explained. “They’re navigating their emotions while the other person is celebrating.”
Despite the emotional turmoil, some therapists note that the decisive nature of Trump’s win, which included clinching the popular vote, has brought clarity for some clients. “People were terrified about facing days and weeks of uncertainty,” Carmichael said. “The clarity can be kind of a saving grace.”
Trump’s sweeping victory has reignited a familiar wave of liberal discontent, echoing the emotional fallout seen after his 2016 win. For therapists in deep-blue cities, the election’s aftermath has created a booming demand for support services.
