Hazing Suspected In Death Of Dartmouth Student Found Deceased
The tragic death of Dartmouth College student Won Jang has led to a police investigation into potential hazing activities. Jang, 20, was found dead in the Connecticut River after attending a social event near the Dartmouth boathouse on Saturday night.
An anonymous email to the college suggested hazing might have been involved, and Hanover Police Chief Charles Dennis confirmed that alcohol was likely a factor. Jang’s fraternity, Beta Alpha Omega, had previously faced disciplinary actions, including a suspension earlier this year for violating community standards.
Jang, a biomedical engineering major, was participating in Dartmouth’s Sophomore Summer program. He was active on campus, working at the DALI lab, the Thayer School of Engineering, and mentoring international students. Friends and fraternity members described him as always cheerful and full of life.
“Won was always an amazing guy. I don’t think there was ever a time when I didn’t see him with a smile on his face,” said Kledian Marinaj, a friend of Jang.
The college has offered grief counseling to help students cope with the loss. Dean Scott Brown highlighted Jang’s contributions to the Dartmouth community in a campus-wide email.
The investigation into Jang’s death is ongoing, with a toxicology report expected to take several months. The community remains in mourning as they await further developments.
