Greenland Prime Minister Pushes For Independence, Cites Colonial Struggles

Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has made a bold call for his nation to seek independence from Denmark, signaling a shift in the Arctic territory’s future. Speaking on Wednesday, Egede declared it was “time to take the next step,” criticizing Greenland’s continued dependence on a government based thousands of miles away in Europe.

Egede described Denmark’s oversight as a remnant of the “colonial era,” arguing that Greenland must remove “the shackles” of this relationship to achieve true equality. He emphasized the need for Greenland to control its own trade relations and partnerships, no longer relying on Denmark as an intermediary.

“The Greenlandic people’s option for independence has been adopted through the provisions of the Self-Government Act,” Egede said. He highlighted that the groundwork for independence is already underway, including the drafting of a constitution and preparations for Greenland to function as an autonomous state.

Despite Trump’s assertions, Egede was quick to reaffirm Greenland’s sovereignty, rejecting any suggestion of foreign ownership. “Greenland is ours,” he said. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

The move toward independence reflects a growing determination among Greenlanders to shape their own future. With constitutional preparations advancing and Egede’s strong rhetoric, Greenland is signaling its readiness to take control of its political and economic destiny.
