GOP Introduces Bill To Cut Funding For NGOs Assisting Illegal Migrants

A group of Republican lawmakers, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), has introduced legislation to cut off federal funding to non-profits and NGOs that assist illegal immigrants in entering and remaining in the U.S. The Blocking Assistance and Resources to Restrict Illegal Entry and Residency (BARRIER) Act is intended to stop these organizations from using taxpayer money to support illegal immigration.

Gaetz, a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump, argued that these groups are working alongside the Biden administration’s “mass-migration” policies. “NGOs and non-profits serve as the foot soldiers for the Biden-Harris administration’s mass-migration policies,” Gaetz said, adding that the federal government should not be funding these efforts.

The bill, which is co-sponsored by Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Mary Miller (R-IL), and Randy Weber (R-TX), comes as illegal immigration remains a major issue in the lead-up to the November elections. The legislation would cut off federal grants to organizations like CASA and the National Immigration Law Center, which have been accused of aiding illegal immigrants.

Recent reports have highlighted the dangers posed by illegal immigration, including violent crimes committed by those who have crossed the border illegally. Gaetz pointed to the recent murder of a nursing student in Georgia by an illegal immigrant as an example of the consequences of lax border policies.

If passed, the BARRIER Act would mark a significant shift in federal funding for immigration-related non-profits and could have a major impact on organizations that rely on government grants. The legislation is expected to gain strong support from Republicans, who have been critical of the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the border crisis.
