Free Illegal Migrants Have Skyrocketing Homicide Rates

A report using U.S. Department of Justice data has highlighted the disproportionate rate of violent crimes committed by illegal migrants on the Non-Detained Docket (NDD). Authored by Dr. John R. Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center, the findings reveal that these crimes cost taxpayers over $166 billion and exceed national averages by a wide margin.

ICE reported to Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) that as of July 2024, over 662,000 illegal migrants with criminal histories are living freely in the U.S. Of these, 435,719 have prior convictions in their home countries, while 226,847 face pending charges.

Lott’s research shows that homicide rates among those on the NDD are 13 times higher than the national average. Data from 2023 revealed 14,944 homicides linked to individuals on the docket. Other crimes include 20,061 sexual assaults, 105,146 assaults, 126,343 traffic offenses, and 60,268 incidents of burglary, larceny, or robbery.

The financial impact of these crimes is substantial. Lott’s analysis estimates the cost at $166.5 billion, with $153.8 billion attributed to murders alone. He cautioned that the figures likely underestimate the true cost, as they assume each offender commits only one crime.

Lott also noted that the study excludes half of the illegal migrants on the NDD, meaning the actual societal costs are likely much higher.

The findings underline concerns about the policies allowing non-detained migrants with criminal histories to remain in the U.S. while their cases are processed.
