Former Vegas Democrat Convicted Of Murdering Investigative Journalist
Robert Telles, a Democrat and former politician from Las Vegas, Nevada, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Jeff German, a veteran investigative journalist who had been reporting on corruption in Las Vegas for decades. German, 69, was stabbed to death outside his home on September 2, 2022, after his investigative work uncovered serious misconduct in Telles’ office.
German’s reports focused on allegations of bullying, favoritism, and other unethical practices in Telles’ workplace. Despite the shocking nature of the crime, several mainstream media outlets like Axios, ABC, AP, and CBS have referred to Telles as an “ex-politician” or “former Las Vegas official,” often omitting his Democratic affiliation, which has led to accusations of biased reporting.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson stressed the importance of the case, stating, “Today’s verdict should send a clear message that any attempts to silence the media, or to silence or intimidate a journalist, will not be tolerated.” Telles, who was also a lawyer, claimed in court that he had been set up by staff members who were unhappy with his efforts to address corruption. However, these claims were dismissed as implausible by the prosecution.
German’s family remembered him as a dedicated journalist who chose to remain in Las Vegas to continue his work despite opportunities elsewhere. His commitment to uncovering the truth in “Sin City” made him a target but also cemented his legacy as a journalist who made a significant impact.
Telles will be eligible for parole after serving at least 20 years, but his conviction serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by those who dare to expose corruption and hold powerful individuals accountable.
