Federal Lawsuit Claims Girl Scout Cookies Contain Heavy Metals And Pesticides
A new class-action lawsuit filed in New York alleges that Girl Scout Cookies contain unsafe levels of heavy metals and pesticides, raising concerns about the safety of the widely popular products. The suit cites laboratory testing that reportedly found contaminants in all cookies sampled.
The legal action, brought by a New York woman, claims that testing revealed aluminum, lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic in the cookies. The analysis, conducted in late 2024, allegedly showed that 100% of the tested samples contained at least four of these substances. Additionally, the lawsuit claims that some cookies contained excessive amounts of glyphosate, a pesticide commonly used in agriculture.

The Girl Scouts have strongly denied any safety risks associated with their products. In a public statement earlier this year, the organization assured consumers that their cookies are produced in compliance with FDA and Global Food Safety Initiative standards. The statement acknowledged that trace amounts of heavy metals and glyphosate can be found in many foods due to natural environmental exposure.

The lawsuit specifically points to Thin Mints, alleging that testing detected glyphosate at concentrations more than 300 times higher than what some independent health researchers deem safe. Additionally, over 95% of the cookies reportedly tested positive for lead.

The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial and demanding financial compensation for alleged consumer deception. They are also asking the court to force the Girl Scouts to change their marketing practices and relinquish profits made from cookie sales.
Despite online speculation, there is no FDA recall of Girl Scout Cookies, and the organization maintains that the products meet all regulatory safety requirements.
