FBI Official Out After Resisting Justice Department Request On Jan 6 Investigators

A high-ranking FBI official has been forced out of his position after refusing to comply with a Justice Department request for the names of agents involved in cases related to the Jan. 6 protests. James Dennehy, who led the bureau’s New York field office, confirmed his resignation in an email to colleagues, saying he was given no explanation for the decision.

Dennehy, a former Marine, was reportedly given the choice to resign or be fired, according to sources. His departure follows an email he sent last month in response to the administration’s request for the names of those involved in prosecuting Jan. 6 cases. In that email, Dennehy expressed concern that good agents were being targeted and urged his colleagues to stand their ground.

The Trump administration has taken significant steps to reshape the FBI, removing senior officials who played roles in investigations involving the former president and his supporters. At least eight high-ranking officials have already been dismissed.

Dennehy was also involved in the federal corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Charges against Adams were dropped after federal prosecutors resigned in protest, accusing the administration of interference.

In his farewell message, Dennehy praised his colleagues and reaffirmed his commitment to the FBI’s mission, vowing to continue standing up for the agency even from outside its ranks.

Dennehy joined the FBI after 9/11 and previously led operations in Newark before taking over the New York field office.
