Faith And Community Drive Recovery After Hurricane Helene
Hurricane Helene’s impact on North Carolina was catastrophic, with hundreds dead and entire communities left in ruins. In response, Catholic Charities and local parishes have provided critical relief to families struggling to recover.
In Swannanoa, St. Margaret Mary parish has been a beacon of hope. The church, which suffered roof damage, has supported its members through a hurricane-relief fund. Claudia Graham, the parish’s business manager, explained that five families lost everything, but donations have enabled them to offer financial aid and counseling.
Amazing
This is the Catholic Church’s response to helping the victims of Hurricane Helene, which has already claimed over 200 lives. The Catholic bishop of Charlotte in North Carolina, along with priests and laypeople, is actively involved in distributing aid.

Tourism, a major part of the local economy, has ground to a halt. Many businesses remain closed, leaving residents without work. Despite these challenges, the community has come together to organize free holiday meals and markets for families in need.

Antonio Garcia, who coordinates Hispanic ministry for the diocese, has focused on helping uninsured families rebuild mobile homes. Many lost their jobs in the storm’s aftermath and have struggled to find resources. “We’re doing everything we can to help these families,” he said.
At St. Eugene Parish in Asheville, recovery has been slow. The church endured significant damage, and attendance remains lower than normal. However, the parish has distributed $275,000 in relief funds and continues to provide Christmas gifts to hundreds of families.
