Elon Musk Endorses Noncitizen Voting Ban, Labels Opponents As ‘Traitors’

Elon Musk has strongly endorsed a bill proposed by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) aimed at ensuring only American citizens can vote in federal elections. Musk, in a tweet, labeled opponents of the bill as “TRAITORS.”

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, initially introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TA), was announced by Johnson earlier this year at a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, Fla. Johnson circulated a memo among the House GOP conference members in the days leading up to the Fourth of July recess. On Friday, he continued advocating for the bill on X, formerly known as Twitter, the social media platform owned by Musk.

“The SAVE Act will safeguard our elections by ensuring only American citizens vote in federal elections,” Johnson stated. He further elaborated on the legislation in a series of posts on X.

The bill mandates that state election officials verify the citizenship status of applicants before providing voter registration forms. Applicants must furnish proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. Additionally, the bill authorizes the Department of Homeland Security to determine if removal proceedings are appropriate for noncitizens who have registered to vote in federal elections.

Musk retweeted Johnson’s posts, declaring, “Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS,” adding, “What is the penalty for traitors again?”

According to Fox Business, the penalty for treason includes death or imprisonment for no less than five years, a fine of no less than $10,000, and being barred from ever holding office in the U.S.
