Drone Collision With Firefighting Plane Sparks FBI Investigation In California

The FBI is actively investigating the drone operator responsible for colliding with a firefighting aircraft during the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County. This dangerous interference with emergency operations has raised serious concerns about drone misuse near active disaster zones.

The incident occurred on January 9 when an unauthorized drone struck Quebec 1, a super scooper aircraft combating the wildfire near Malibu. The collision created a 3-by-6-inch hole in the aircraft’s wing, forcing it out of service for five critical days. Although the plane landed safely, the loss of this vital resource hindered firefighting efforts during a rapidly spreading blaze.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had implemented a temporary flight restriction (TFR) over the fire zone to protect emergency aircraft. The drone operator’s actions violated this restriction, prompting the FBI to launch a criminal investigation. Parts of the damaged drone were recovered, and authorities are asking the public for tips to help identify the pilot.

Interfering with firefighting operations using drones is a federal offense punishable by up to 12 months in prison and fines up to $75,000. The FAA and local officials have repeatedly warned that drones pose a serious risk to firefighting crews and can ground aircraft critical to containing wildfires.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated that repairs on Quebec 1 have been completed and the plane is awaiting FAA approval to resume service. Marrone stressed the importance of keeping airspace clear during wildfire response to protect both personnel and affected communities.

As California battles intense wildfires, incidents like this highlight the need for stronger enforcement against unauthorized drone activity. The FBI remains focused on bringing the responsible party to justice and ensuring that emergency responders can operate safely and effectively.
