DOJ Opens Criminal Probe Into NYC Hotels Used As Migrant Shelters

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a criminal investigation into two hotels in New York City that have been converted into migrant shelters, according to reports. Federal prosecutors have issued subpoenas to the Roosevelt Hotel and the Stewart Hotel, both of which have been used to house illegal immigrants arriving in the city.

The Roosevelt Hotel, which has served as a migrant processing center, has reportedly handled more than 170,000 migrants since 2023. The Stewart Hotel has been used solely as a shelter. A third hotel, the Hotel Chandler, also received a subpoena, but it is reportedly being used as a homeless shelter rather than for migrants.

The subpoenas reference alleged violations of federal immigration law, with authorities requesting names and birthdates of individuals who have stayed at these locations. Prosecutors have also asked for details on funding sources and contracts related to the city’s migrant housing program.

New York City taxpayers have spent billions on migrant housing since 2022, as more than 232,000 border crossers have arrived in the city. At the height of the crisis in early 2024, more than 69,000 migrants were in the city’s care. That number has since dropped to around 45,000.

The Roosevelt Hotel deal has drawn particular scrutiny, as reports indicate New York City agreed to pay up to $220 million for its use as a shelter. The hotel is owned by the government of Pakistan, and the deal was allegedly connected to a $1.1 billion International Monetary Fund bailout to help Pakistan avoid defaulting on its international debt.

Mayor Eric Adams has not commented on the investigation but has announced that the Roosevelt Hotel will soon close. The facility is one of 53 migrant shelters scheduled for closure by June.

This development follows revelations that the Biden administration allocated $59 million in FEMA funds to house illegal immigrants in luxury hotels, despite previous claims that such funding was not being used for migrants.
