DOGE Uncovers $4.7 Trillion In Untraceable Federal Payments Amid Push For Spending Cuts

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), spearheaded by Elon Musk, has identified $4.7 trillion in federal spending that lacked proper tracking, raising serious concerns about financial accountability. This figure represents nearly 70% of last year’s federal expenditures, with payments missing a Treasury Account Symbol (TAS), a key tracking code used to link spending to specific budget lines.

Musk’s team announced that federal agencies will now be required to include TAS codes on all transactions, a move aimed at increasing transparency in government spending. In a post on X, DOGE stated that the TAS field had been optional for years, making oversight difficult. “As of Saturday, this is now a required field, increasing insight into where money is actually going,” the agency wrote.

DOGE, which was created through an executive order by President Donald Trump, has saved taxpayers approximately $55 billion through fraud detection, contract renegotiations, workforce reductions, and regulatory changes. Musk has set a target of cutting $2 trillion from federal spending.

In addition to uncovering untraceable payments, DOGE has flagged concerns over outdated Social Security records. Musk posted data suggesting that millions of Americans over the age of 100 remain eligible for benefits, including individuals listed as being over 360 years old. “This might be the biggest fraud in history,” Musk wrote on X, suggesting that payments may have been issued due to agency errors or fraudulent claims.

Meanwhile, DOGE has requested access to the IRS’s Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), a heavily protected database containing taxpayer records. The request has sparked concerns from privacy advocates and IRS officials, who warn that allowing DOGE access to such sensitive data could lead to misuse. Former taxpayer advocate Nina Olson cautioned that the IRS stores highly personal financial information that, if exposed, could violate individuals’ rights.

The agency has also begun major cost-cutting efforts within the federal government, including layoffs at the Federal Aviation Administration and budget reviews at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Housing Secretary Scott Turner announced that a new task force, created in partnership with DOGE, had already identified $260 million in additional savings.

DOGE claims that eliminating paper checks issued by federal agencies could save the government $750 million annually. The Treasury Department processed 116 million paper checks in fiscal 2024, with maintenance costs for check collection estimated at $2.40 per check.

Republicans in Congress have voiced strong support for DOGE’s efforts. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called the revelation of untraceable payments “4.7 trillion reasons” to question whether the missing tracking codes were due to incompetence or something more deliberate.

A federal judge recently extended a block preventing DOGE from accessing the Treasury Department’s payment system, which processes trillions of dollars in federal transactions. Despite this setback, DOGE remains committed to its mission, with Musk and his team vowing to push forward with aggressive cost-cutting measures across the federal government.
