DOGE Targets Lawmakers’ Wealth As Pelosi And Schumer Face Questions

Elon Musk is setting his sights on Congress, questioning how some lawmakers have amassed fortunes far beyond their public salaries. Speaking at a town hall in Wisconsin, Musk announced that his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is investigating what he described as “strangely wealthy” members of Congress.

Musk raised eyebrows by suggesting that public funds might be making their way back to certain elected officials through indirect channels. When asked about Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Musk said funds could be funneled through non-governmental organizations overseas before circling back into the U.S.

“They’ll send the money overseas to one NGO,” Musk explained, “then they’ll go through a bunch of them, and then I’m highly confident that a bunch of that money then comes back to the United States and lands in the pockets of the people you just mentioned.”

He emphasized that it’s not a direct transfer, but a complex financial trail that makes it harder to detect. Musk said DOGE is working to follow that trail and expose how certain politicians have become multimillionaires on government paychecks.

The average annual salary for a member of Congress is $174,000, yet many longtime lawmakers are millionaires. Musk questioned how some managed to turn that into net worths of $20 million or more. He suggested that raising salaries might help deter corruption but emphasized that the real goal is to stop illicit financial gains.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has long faced scrutiny for her personal fortune, estimated around $250 million. Her financial success is often linked to her husband’s investments in major tech companies. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) previously called Pelosi the “ultimate stock insider.”

Musk’s DOGE team is reportedly looking into these patterns as part of a larger push for transparency. During the town hall, Musk said that “a lot of strangely wealthy members of Congress” are on his radar.

He also drew attention by awarding $1 million checks to two voters during the event, aiming to raise awareness for his petition targeting activist judges.
