Community Rallies Behind NC Man’s 5,000-Plate Mission
Nearly 200 volunteers mobilized to support David Burke’s ambitious plan feeding thousands of Hurricane Helene survivors this Thanksgiving in western North Carolina’s devastated mountain region.
Burke, drawing from his competitive barbecue background, coordinates preparation of 100 turkeys and hams at a makeshift kitchen facility. The Margarettsville resident’s initiative grew from an initial 1,000-meal goal after widespread community response.
“Local churches, businesses and individuals stepped forward immediately,” Burke said. The Seaboard Lions Club manages donations, ensuring transparent distribution of resources for the massive undertaking.
The operation targets Newland after Burke watched coverage highlighting the town’s struggles. “Their recovery needs exceeded available assistance,” he said, noting gaps in government support two months after the hurricane.
Beyond feeding storm survivors, Burke organized a separate event serving Eastern-style barbecue to 500 veterans. “Supporting multiple communities shows Carolina values,” he said.
Volunteers praise Burke’s organizational skills amid logistical challenges. “His competition experience proves invaluable for large-scale food preparation,” said John Miller, who assists with coordination.
The initiative demonstrates regional solidarity during crisis. “Distance means nothing when neighbors need help,” Burke said.
