Colombia Bows To Trump’s Demands After Tariff Threat Over Deportation Flights
Colombia has agreed to accept all deportation flights from the United States after President Donald Trump threatened steep tariffs and sanctions against the nation for refusing to comply with U.S. immigration policies. The White House confirmed that the administration will hold off on imposing penalties as long as Colombia follows through with its commitments.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro initially rejected the flights, prompting Trump to announce tariffs of 25% on all Colombian imports, with the threat of increasing them to 50%. In response, Petro’s government attempted to retaliate with its own tariff measures, but ultimately conceded to Trump’s demands to avoid economic fallout.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the Colombian government agreed to accept all deported nationals, including those transported on U.S. military aircraft. However, visa sanctions and border inspections will continue until the first repatriation flights are confirmed.

Petro’s reversal came after he initially insisted that deported Colombians should be returned on civilian flights, arguing that military transport treated them like criminals. Despite his objections, the Colombian government eventually complied, with officials stating they had resolved the issue and were prepared to facilitate the returns.

Trump’s actions have demonstrated his unwavering stance on illegal immigration and his willingness to use economic pressure to ensure compliance. He has warned that any further refusal by Colombia could result in severe economic consequences.

Colombian officials will soon meet with their U.S. counterparts in Washington, D.C., to finalize the logistics of the agreement and ensure future cooperation on deportation matters.
