Clinton expressed disappointment with Congress, calling it “dysfunctional” when it comes to tackling online “misinformation” and harmful content. She noted that while some states have taken action, this piecemeal approach is inadequate. “We need national action,” she insisted — of course, she wants to be in charge of these new regulations.

At the heart of Clinton’s push is the repeal of Section 230, a law that gives social media companies immunity from lawsuits for content posted by users. Clinton believes that this protection is outdated and has allowed platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook to avoid responsibility for the spread of harmful material.

Clinton warned that without stricter moderation, the consequences could be severe. “If these platforms don’t moderate, we lose total control,” she said, stressing that the issue isn’t just about online content but also has real-life implications for public safety.

In the past, Clinton has pointed to her 2016 election loss to President Donald Trump as an example of how misinformation can affect democracy. She has called for those involved in spreading propaganda online to face legal penalties.

While Clinton’s proposals are just censorship, her supporters argue that regulating harmful content is necessary to protect both democracy and public safety. The goal is clearly to control what is considered to be true and what is not.
