Bodycam Footage Shows Buffalo Cop Shoot Driver Dragging Him During Traffic Stop
Newly released bodycam footage shows a Buffalo police officer shooting and killing a driver who tried to flee a traffic stop while dragging the officer. The incident occurred early Wednesday near Kensington Avenue when the officer stopped the driver for speeding and illegal window tint.
The driver, identified as Dae’von Roberts, could not provide a valid ID and suddenly accelerated, dragging the officer who clung to the vehicle.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia explained that the officer feared for his life, shouting, “You’re going to kill me!” as the car sped up to 60 mph. The officer then fired five shots, causing the car to veer off and eventually stop after both men tumbled out. A 6-year-old child in the car was unharmed, and the officer suffered minor injuries.
Roberts was the half-brother of Jaylen Griffen, a 12-year-old boy whose remains were found in an attic in April after being missing for four years. The police are investigating any potential links between Roberts and Griffen’s death. Gramaglia stated, “Reviewing the video, going through the evidence that we have, I do believe that is a justified use of force.”
This tragic event underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and the critical decisions they must make in high-risk situations.
